There Are Now 20,000 Orders for the Sono Sion, the First Solar EV in the World

Within the next seven years, the German firm hopes to have manufactured around 257,000 Sion EVs.
One criticism of the EV age is that the electricity used to charge the batteries isn’t entirely pollution-free. Sono Motors, based out of Munich, Germany, provides a response for those who believe solar power is a potential option.

The Sono Sion, released in 2017, was the first solar-powered electric car. As of September 1, 2022, the firm claims that over 20,000 people have reserved a Sion. Each private reservation typically has a down payment of €2,000 ($1,990 at the current currency rate).

According to Sono, the Sion may be yours for the low, low sum of €25,126 (about $25,000.) The business believes this will make the Sion the first affordable mass-produced solar-powered electric vehicle (SEV).

It is expected that manufacturing of the Sono Sion would begin in the second part of 2023. The production and manufacture will be handled by Sono Motors’ Finnish partner, Valmet Automotive. Following the first starting-out phase. Within the next seven years, Sono plans to manufacture around 257,000 Sion cars.

While the Genesis Electrified G80 has a solar roof, the Sion has solar panels on practically every flat surface. These include the hood, roof, fenders, quarter panels, and hatch. The only non-solar component is the front end, which is designed to be inexpensive to repair in the event of an accident.

Over the course of a week, the Sion’s 70-mile (112-kilometer) range from its 456 solar panels should be sufficient for unlimited driving. In places where the sun is always above, that number might easily quadruple.

In addition to its solar panels, the Sion is equipped with a 54 kWh battery pack, allowing it to go up to 190 miles (305 kilometers) according to the WLTP standard. There is a 75 kW limit on how fast the little battery can be charged, but the vehicle also supports bi-directional charging, which may transform it into a mobile power plant with a 2.7 kW output.
